What is the Hirsch index/h-index? How can I check my h-index and my citations?

Hirsch index/h-index - is a rate that describes the impact of an individual scientist’s/scholar’s achievements. Its value is h when h publications of a given author have been cited at least h times. For instance, when 10 publications of a given author have been cited 10 or more times, the author’s h-index is 10. The h-index illustrates both the number of publications and the average number of citations of each publication.
Using this index is useful when comparing the achievements of scientists working in the same field of science because the average number of citations of individual publications depends largely on the research area.
When a scientist/scholar publishes an open access publication, the number of citations can be calculated using the following free tools:

• Web Of Science
• Scopus
• a Google Scholar Citations profile
• “Publish Or Perish” software (available: here)
• a Firefox plugin: Scholar H-Index Calculator
• Scholarometer software

It is important to bear in mind that the results obtained from different sources may differ depending on the contents of the database a given tool makes use of.
A popular tool used to calculate the h-index is Google Scholar Citations, which makes it possible to calculate one’s h-index and manage the citations of one’s publications.
