Rector’s scholarship awarded on the grounds of arithmetic average of grades

Please first become familiar with general information about rector’s scholarships in the article “Who can receive a rector’s scholarship? On what grounds?” and information about the right to apply for scholarships/grants – including a rector's scholarship – in the article “What conditions one needs to meet to be eligible for a scholarship/grant?”

Information for the academic year 2024/2025

  1. A rector’s scholarship granted on the grounds of outstanding academic performance, i.e. a high grade point average, may be applied for by a student:
  • who achieved an arithmetic grade point average of at least 4.60 in the academic year 2023/2024 (an average of at least 4.60 makes one eligible to apply for a rector’s scholarship, but does not guarantee the scholarship will be granted),
  • who has been promoted to the next year of study (and a first-year student of a second-cycle (graduate-level) programme),
  • who did not repeat a year/semester of studies in the academic year 2023/2024,
  • who is not repeating a year/semester of studies in the academic year 2024/2025,
  • who has completed less than 12 semesters of study (or less than 9 semesters of first-cycle (undergraduate-level) studies if applying for a scholarship as a student of a first-cycle programme).
  1. Based on the submitted e-applications for a rector’s scholarship with the arithmetic average grade of at least 4.60, the Grants Committee draws up a ranking list for each field of study represented in the submitted applications.
  2. The ranking lists referred to above will include the student’s details, the grade point averages from the 2023/2024 academic year, and the number of points assigned to each average, including any additional points, in accordance with Appendix no. 5.1 to the KU Student Support Regulations (regulations on the benefits granted to students) – download file  (lists will be ordered by score, starting with the highest number of points).
  3. The grade point average is an arithmetic average and is calculated on the basis of the sum of grades obtained from all courses included in the programme of study (curriculum) pursued by the student in a given academic year. The sum of the grades should be divided by the number of grades – including failing grades.
  4. The arithmetic average grade is calculated rounded mathematically to two decimal points based on the third decimal digit.
  5. The arithmetic average of grades does not include the grades obtained for one’s thesis and diploma examination.
  6. If the grading scale at the higher education institution where a student has completed their first-cycle studies or from which they have transferred to KU is different from that adopted at KU, the arithmetic average grade shall be adapted to KU’s grading scale and calculated as follows:
    • it is necessary to determine the share (in percentage terms) of the highest possible grade average at the previous higher education institution represented the student’s grade average (up to four decimal points);
    • the same share (in percentage terms) should be determined for the highest possible grade average at KU;
    • the obtained result, according to item 2, is the student’s grade average recognised at KU.
  7. When determining the arithmetic average of a student’s grades, the grades obtained by the student in the same field of study as part of which they apply for a rector’s scholarship are taken into account – with the following exceptions:
In the case of:
  1. a first-year student of a second-cycle (graduate-level) programme or
  2. a first-year student of a single-cycle degree programme taken up after completing their first-cycle (undergraduate-level) programme
    - when determining the arithmetic average of the student’s grades, it is possible to take into account the grades obtained by the student in another field of study if in the academic year 2023/2024 the student did not pursue the field of study as part of which they submit their application.
  1. The student’s arithmetic grade point average is confirmed by the relevant KU student office in certificate no. 5A (the student requests the issuance of certificate no. 5A in mykozminski).
  2. In addition to certificate no. 5A, the student shall submit a certificate no. 5F regarding their course of study together with their application. The student addresses the relevant KU student office with a request for a certificate 5F through the mykozminski system.
  3. In the case of a first-year student of a second-cycle (graduate-level) programme or a single-cycle master’s degree programme applying for a rector’s scholarship on the grounds of the grade point average obtained in the academic year 2023/2024 in a first-cycle (undergraduate-level) programme at a university other than KU – it is mandatory to submit a certificate from this university:
a) confirming the student’s arithmetic grade average with two decimal places, with the second decimal place rounded mathematically based on the third digit; the average calculated on the basis of the sum of grades obtained from all courses included in the programme of study (curriculum) pursued by the student in the academic year 2023/2024, taking into account also the failing grades, divided by the number of grades, and
b) providing the following information:
grading scale,
date of thesis defence,
number of semesters completed by the student as part of their studies in the academic year 2023/2024,
whether the student repeated a year/semester in the academic year 2023/2024The certificate from the previous university should be submitted via mykozminski to the relevant KU student office along with a request to issue certificates no. 5A and 5F.
  1. The grade average that provides the grounds for a scholarship for a given field of study in a given academic year will depend on the number of all applications for a rector’s scholarship submitted and on the amount of funds the committee will have at disposal. The average thresholds and scholarship/grant amounts for a given academic year are announced in the Rector’s Decision.
